After a hard fought 90 minutes and an inability to settle the score during extra time, the match went to penalties. Union Omaha failed to capitalize, and Breizh-Île move onto the semi-finals of the French Division 1.1 League Cup.

Union Omaha’s forward Martín Muñoz attempts to create a goal-scoring opportunity.

On May 18, Union Omaha and Briezh-Île faced off in a crunch match for a spot in the League Cup semi-finals. Breizh-Île looked to defend their first ever title while Union Omaha made their debut in the competition after having been promoted to the top flight last season.

Breizh-Île certainly dominated much of the first 90 minutes in the match. In the 10th minute, Union Omaha’s defender Oon Keow Maung crossed the ball in for a corner. The ball found the head of forward Martin Muñoz as he rose to finish. Breizh-Île’s keeper Jeremy MacCulloth did not have trouble dealing with it and made a routine save. Defender Simon Tagnar of Breizh-Île received a yellow card in the 18th minute for a sloppy tackle on Union Omaha’s forward Boubacar Ibrahim that left him writhing in pain on the grass. The rest of the first half was dominated by Breizh-Île with bits of passing and crucial tackles that closed down the opposition. In the second half, Union Omaha wiggled their way into the match with a few chances. In the 60th minute, midfielder Jonathan Braithwaite directed an absolute rocket of a shot that looked certain for goal. MacCulloth once again made an absolute stellar save, and the score remained 0-0. Union Omaha had a variety of chances in the second half that could have led to goals, but MacCulloth was there to keep his team in the game. The score could not be settled after 90 minutes, and the match entered extra-time. Union Omaha really turned on the heat, having conserved their energy during regular time. Unfortunately, their chances were not enough to break down Breizh-Île’s defense, and the match went to the dreaded penalties. Union Omaha’s Jonathan Braithwaite stepped up to kick first, but MacCulloth made a great save. Each team scored once and Breizh-Île had the advantage until Alain Ternette’s shot hit the crossbar, giving Union Omaha a new breath of life. However, both of the Owls' following shots were poor, and the referee blew his whistle to signal the end of the game. The Breizh-Île fans rejoiced and the Union Omaha fans put their faces in their hands.

“That’s the game of football, I’m afraid,” told us Union Omaha manager 元気さん in a short post-match interview, “In penalties there has to be a winner and a loser, and unfortunately we drew the short end of the stick. Regardless, I am absolutely proud of the lads and their efforts tonight against the top team in France.”

“It had to go to penalties, but I’m glad we powered through,” told us Breizh-Île manager Edgar Palatujaine, “I’m happy for the boys and we’re excited to keep going to be able to defend our title.” Breizh-Île will face The Lads for a shot at playing in the final of the League Cup.

Time to relocate? Construction for a potential new stadium for Union Omaha is underway.

The Corn Field has been home for Union Omaha for the last three seasons. However, as the club continues to grow, it may be time to leave the nursing nest and find a place of its own.

“Don’t get me wrong, I’m absolutely honored to have the boys using my farm as a venue for their matches,” told us a local farmer, “but they’re ruining my crops! The corn isn’t as good anymore, and the missus even found a piece of gum inside our carrots! She gave me an ultimatum: either she would leave or the boys had to. She forced my hand a little, and unfortunately the boys have got to go.”

After this rather bizarre development, Union Omaha has decided that they will leave the Corn Field by the end of the season. However, do not fret, as the new venue has already started construction!

How the club was allowed to play on a non-regulation field to begin with is beyond us, but that will soon change. The club has announced that once the stadium is complete, the fans will be allowed to pick a new name for themselves! We will continue to update you as construction continues.

Until then, take care.
