Season 41 of Maidaan Master brought subtle yet significant progress, as the club finished 7th in the league table, improving on last year’s 8th place. The season may not have had the same drama as previous campaigns, but it did come with a few notable moments.
One of the biggest highlights was the transfer of 22-year-old center-back Irfan Fandi from Portugal’s top division for a whopping $101 million. "He’s the kind of player who can solidify our defense for years to come," said Darshan Shinde. "Bringing in Fandi shows we are building for the future."
On the attacking side, Riccardo Orsolini once again led from the front, netting 19 goals for the club, while Patrick Wimmer chipped in with 13 goals. Yu Yao-hsing also had a great impact, scoring 10 goals in just 13 matches, showing he could be a key player in the seasons to come.
Playmaker Samuel Elvir continued to work his magic in midfield, providing an impressive 22 assists. Goalkeeper Randall Rodriguez, stepping up as the team’s undisputed No.1, kept 14 clean sheets, proving to be a reliable presence between the sticks.
Unfortunately, finishing 7th meant Maidaan Master would not be participating in world competitions next season, as only the top 6 clubs qualify. Still, the team remained upbeat. "We’ve made progress, even if we didn’t hit the global stage this time," said Shinde. "The goal now is to push higher, and we’ve got the resources to do that."
Off the field, the club's finances remained in excellent shape despite their investment in Fandi. "With more than $150 million in the bank, we’re in a strong position financially," remarked club accountant Olaf Svendson. "It gives us room to maneuver in the transfer market while staying competitive."
The season also saw the departure of Nigerian captain Ademola Lookman, who, at 31, moved to the French league to enjoy a semi-retirement. "Lookman was a leader on and off the pitch," said Orsolini. "We’ll miss him, but we know he’s earned this new chapter in his career."
Overall, it was a quieter season for Maidaan Master, but the incremental improvement in league position and the addition of key players like Fandi suggest that Darshan Shinde’s long-term vision is still firmly in place. "We may not have had fireworks, but we laid solid foundations for the future," said Shinde. "Next season, the goal is to break into the top 6."
